THE SPRING CAREER EXPO—SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

I had a great conversation recently with Eileen Wisnewski, executive director of our Chirico Career Center, about the upcoming Spring Career Expo that will take place on Wednesday, March 19, from 2:30 PM-5:00 PM, in Peterson Center. According to Eileen, who has more than twenty-five years of experience in the career development field, she works with an “amazing group of passionate and talented career coaches.”  All of them are looking forward to meeting students at this popular annual event.

I think you will agree that there is lots of good information here for you to share with your students.

Can you tell us a little bit about the Spring Career Expo and some of the components of this event?

The Spring Career Expo is our largest event of the spring (we have both Fall and Spring events.)  We take over the Peterson Recreation Center and fill it with employers/organizations and graduate schools. They are looking for Providence College students who are seeking full-time, part-time and volunteer opportunities in addition to looking to further their education after they graduate from PC.

We also hire a photographer who takes professional headshots that students can use for their LinkedIn and FriarHub profiles. The registrations fill up very quickly, so students should watch the Career newsletter for further information.

Who can benefit the most from this experience?

This is a great question – EVERYONE! Some students are ready to meet with employers to discuss internships, full-time opportunities, and/or graduate school. Others might be looking to identify organizations where they can volunteer their time.

For younger students, however, if they are not ready to approach the EXPO in this fashion, it is a good opportunity for them to meet with alumni and recruiters to discover more information about their organizations and opportunities available. It is also a great way to become familiar with the event, so it isn’t as daunting in the future.

It is also important to note that this event is not just for business majors, we have many organizations who want to meet with Liberal Arts students!  We encourage students who have Arts & Sciences majors to meet with a career coach before the EXPO to explore the organization list and develop a strategy on navigating the event.

Do you have suggestions for parents to pass on to their students about how they can make the most of the Expo?

  • Meet with a Career Coach as soon as possible to prepare yourself and a resume for the event.
  • Read our Sunday newsletters to learn about EXPO preparation events and more specific information.
  • Log in to the FriarHub to see what organizations are attending – doing this ahead of time is more efficient and helps students to be better prepared.
  • Locate Chirico Career Center team members if you have questions or need support – this event can sometimes feel overwhelming.
  • Come early – most of the students arrive in the middle of the event.
