MANAGING END OF SEMESTER STRESS

The end of the semester can be especially stressful for students as they approach looming deadlines for papers and projects while also preparing for final exams. During this pressure packed time it is more important than ever that they try to incorporate self-care practices into their daily living.

Below are some suggestions from our Personal Counseling Center (PCC) that we hope you will pass on to your Friars to help them more effectively manage stress at this challenging time. Practicing self-care and making use of resources can go a long way in helping students to feel less over-whelmed and more in control as they navigate the end of the semester.

 God Bless.

As finals approach, it’s very normal for students to feel more stressed, overwhelmed, or off their usual routines. While some stress can help with motivation, too much can take a toll. One way families can support their student is by encouraging small moments of self-care, whether that’s taking study breaks, practicing good sleep hygiene, or taking a relaxing walk.

On campus, students have access to spaces like our Relaxation Room, a quiet, low-stimulation environment designed to help students decompress. The relaxation room offers a full-body massage chair, weighted blankets, yoga mats, recliner seating, calming salt lamps, and guided relaxation recordings. There are even small take-away items like eye masks that students can bring home with them. The space is open 9am–4pm Monday through Friday. Availability is based on a first-come, first-served walk-in basis and up to two students at a time may be in the relaxation room.

The PCC offers fidgets, snacks, hot chocolate, mints, and a robust tea selection. You might consider asking your student what they’re doing to take care of themselves during this busy time. Your student can join us on May 5th from 11am–2pm on the Slavin Lawn to enjoy frozen lemonade and arts & crafts. Sometimes a simple check-in can go a long way in helping them feel supported and balanced.
